Housing Assistance and Repair Program in Savannah

Ranked as one of the best places in the United States to invest and do business, Georgia is a state with major ports and terminals that provide more than half a million jobs annually.

Within the state of Georgia is the coastal city of Savannah, an important center that hosts one of the most profitable and economically impactful ports for the state. To position itself as one of the largest export centers, the port must maintain its workforce, the main factor for the good development of the area.

To provide assistance to the communities near the port and to workers with low and moderate incomes, first-time homebuyers, and renters, the city has created a housing initiative, supported by the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA). The initiative is focused on helping with home repairs, preventing foreclosures by assisting homeowners who are struggling with their mortgage loans, and providing down payment assistance for a home in the city of Savannah to eligible applicants.

The goal is to improve the quality of life and offer better conditions within their homes to residents, workers, and families near the Savannah port, as well as to provide them the opportunity to become first-time homeowners. To achieve this goal, the initiative has initially allocated more than half a million dollars to carry out 60 home repairs for homes in poor condition, six housing construction projects, and 14 property purchases.

However, this is just the beginning, as helping people maintain and improve their home conditions, preserve housing, and avoid foreclosure is a vital factor for the city’s workforce, and fundamentally the port’s, to remain strong, productive, and preserved.

As a fundamental goal of the housing plan, the GPA is committed to developing, preserving, protecting, increasing, and promoting the availability of affordable housing for workers and residents of the city of Savannah. All functions aim to preserve the workforce and the economy of the city.

The initiative is a joint effort between Housing Savannah, Inc., the Savannah Housing Fund, and the GPA. They all work to ensure that funds are allocated to homeowners or first-time homebuyers with low or moderate monthly incomes, so they can have a home and a decent quality of life.
