Ogden officials create measures to limit housing growth

Although affordability and housing scarcity have always been trends in all American states and cities seeking to meet the needs of the population through massive construction of apartments and residential complexes, the city of Ogden has decided to face it differently.

Recently, the Ogden administration has decided to change the areas of the city to limit apartment constructions in the busiest and commercial zones of the city with the sole objective, authorities state, of preserving these areas.

To achieve the authorities’ proposal, projects that will be authorized will now be those that seek to create complexes or apartment buildings in less trafficked areas that are more suitable for the good development of the city, such as areas where residents can have more trails, schools, parks, and open spaces that allow for a quieter and more balanced quality of life.

Conversely, apartment construction projects for commercial zones or the busiest areas of the city will no longer be approved as they are considered not to be the most conducive spaces for families and because these constructions could limit the commercial development of the city.

The planning director of Ogden has pointed out that Ogden needs a more balanced housing development and that the city’s current need is for single-family homes, as there are currently multiple approved building projects, and it is necessary for balance and for residents to have other types of options.

Among the statements made by the director to motivate and clarify the change in the city’s zoning is that, in addition to Ogden already having enough apartments and housing complexes, local authorities do not want to have a large volume of properties in areas unsuitable for habitation that do not meet demand and end up generating a social problem for the administration.

According to opponents, this new measure implemented by the administration for the zoning change and the desire to build more single-family homes in Ogden is not addressing the real social problem and is not appropriately tackling the issue of housing scarcity.
