The city of Waterbury is working on housing projects

To try to address the conflicts generated by the lack of housing in Waterbury, the Department of Housing and the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority have allocated resources for the construction of housing to help meet the city’s housing demand, especially for properties intended for rent by low-income residents.

One of the projects that the city of Waterbury has developed with these resources was the construction of 44 apartments, which were recently inaugurated and created for those individuals and families with incomes below the city average.

The Linden Street apartments have been built on an old abandoned building, a deteriorated multifamily house, and some parking lots. All of these lots were acquired by the Harold Webster Smith Foundation.

With the construction of these buildings, the aim is, in addition to increasing the availability of affordable housing, to reduce the social impact that these vacant lots were causing in the community. Therefore, of the total properties, 35% will be designated as affordable, and the remaining housing will be offered at the current market price of Waterbury’s real estate.

And although Connecticut’s affordable housing law requires that 10% of approved housing projects be designated for affordable housing, the new Linden Street apartments are well above the state-required percentage.

The housing project consists of two towers and has the capacity to accommodate more than 100 residents. The design of the constructed properties features quality materials, different dimensions, and their prices will vary according to the chosen format.

Currently, only one person has occupied one of the apartments, but the buildings have multiple applications pending approval, as long as they meet the required criteria.

Although hundreds of families are waiting for their applications for affordable housing that fits their monthly income to be approved, the mayor has stated that this will not be the only project the city will develop, as the priority of his administration is to provide Waterbury with housing that meets the needs of the residents and families in the community.
