NeighborWorks Laredo Organization Receives a $169,000 Grant

Henry Cuellar, a United States Representative, recently visited the NeighborWorks Laredo Organization to announce that they will receive a federal grant worth $169,000.

This funding aims to assist in the creation of affordable housing, help in job creation, rejuvenate neighborhoods in Webb County, and continue the work of preventing home foreclosures in the city of Laredo.

During his visit, Representative Cuellar noted that NeighborWorks has helped more than 17,000 people in Webb County and nearby regions by offering affordable housing, counseling, and assistance to prevent around 500 foreclosures, teaching homeowners how to keep their properties. Cuellar also stated: “The economic benefit for Laredo is enormous, so this is an important education and investment for first-time buyers, in addition to helping numerous families acquire their homes.”

Representative Cuellar concluded by saying that NeighborWorks Laredo has facilitated home acquisition for 84 new homeowners, resulting in a community investment of up to $14,715,661. This includes areas such as Rio Bravo, El Cenizo, and Zapata.

Elizabeth Alonzo-Villareal, Executive Director of NeighborWorks Laredo, mentioned that her organization received the grant from NeighborWorks America, which is funded by the federal government. She said: “These funds are for our operations and provide the staff with the necessary resources to offer educational counseling for homebuyers, foreclosure prevention, credit improvement, and affordable rentals and housing.”

Alonzo-Villareal encourages more people to attend NeighborWorks Laredo’s homebuyer education class, which will help them be well-informed before entering the real estate market. In these classes, community members can meet with the organization’s counselors, check their credit without affecting their credit score, and prepare for when they feel ready to become homebuyers.
