Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, seeks to expand affordable housing options
Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie stated in recent days that nearly twelve acres of land located on Park Avenue Boulevard will soon be allocated for developing a large affordable housing project.
The project announced by the mayor has generated great anticipation among the residents of Mount Pleasant and the neighboring city of Charleston, not only because of the search for homes at good prices but also due to the attractive location of the project, which, in the mayor’s words, is privileged, as it is situated in an area with a nearby hospital, two fire stations, six schools, and major retail stores.
In the coming days, the town council will hold its final vote on the Carolina Park Planned Development, allowing affordable housing at this site.
Mayor Will Haynie continued his remarks by mentioning that the proposed homes, which will only be available for purchase, will be priced between $300,000 and $400,000. To qualify for purchasing one of these properties, future homeowners must meet a specific percentage of the area’s median income. Therefore, the mayor said, “this includes our first responders, teachers, and healthcare workers. We need to welcome these people instead of excluding them with the $1 million average home sale prices we saw last month.”
Glenn Wood, administrator of Seacoast Church, who bought the parcel years ago for a second campus in Mount Pleasant, said that after their purchase, they decided the land was not suitable for their church, so they put it up for sale, and after receiving several offers, they chose to sell it to an affordable housing developer.
Mr. Wood concluded his remarks by saying, “we believe this would be a great use of the land, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the town to have affordable housing and for teachers, firefighters, nurses, and even some of our staff to have their own homes, as some have to live outside of Mount Pleasant and commute due to real estate costs.”
The developer of the project is Prosperity Builders, a firm that already has another affordable housing project in Mount Pleasant called Gregorie Ferry Towns.
