New Affordable Housing in Greensboro
The need for affordable housing is a concerning issue for all city administrations in America, and even more so for the administration of the city of Greensboro, which, according to a recent study, needs over 30,000 affordable housing units to meet the demand of its residents.
In order to provide more affordable housing, the Greensboro administration is implementing measures and strategies that can satisfy this high demand. One of the strategies they intend to develop is through the purchase of old properties or vacant land where new affordable housing can be built.
The clearest example of their strategy was recently carried out with the purchase of the old Regency Inn motel. For 4 years, the purchase of this property has sparked debates among city leaders, who recently made a definitive decision regarding its acquisition and the use that will be given to this property.
Located at 2701 O’Henry Boulevard in Greensboro, the Regency Inn was a 58-room motel that operated until 3 years ago. Subsequently, the property fell into the hands of neighbors who caused structural damage and vandalism. Later, the city used it as an emergency shelter, and in order to prevent it from becoming an unsafe place and a meeting point for homeless individuals and drug addicts, they decided to demolish it since the structural damage and deterioration of the property did not allow for its rehabilitation for future use.
Once the property was demolished, leaving its land available for a future affordable housing project and in order to promote housing and improve that area of Greensboro, the city council hopes that several housing developers and investors will present their ideas and possible projects that can be developed there, always expecting that affordable housing and spaces that serve the community will be developed.
According to city leaders, they hope that projects will be carried out that maximize the potential of the property with possible constructions of townhouses, rehabilitation centers, or even tiny homes.
On the other hand, the Director of Housing and Neighborhood Development of Greensboro expresses that the city’s sole objective is to develop affordable housing in this space and in others that the city will later purchase to address the housing demand of residents.
