Project of Houses for Homeless People in Jackson

To address the homelessness issue that the city of Jackson is facing, a nonprofit organization has created a small house project to house people who do not have a home because they have lost their house in a foreclosure process or because they simply have never been able to acquire their own housing.

This innovative housing project aims, in addition to building 60 small house units, to create a community in West Jackson where many homeless individuals and families feel safe and have the opportunity to access vital resources and services that will allow them to obtain permanent housing and become self-sufficient.

The executive director of the housing plan hopes to develop around 400 homes in the future, but the resources initially raised by the organization will allow them to initially build 60 houses on a site occupied by an old transitional housing facility from the Mississippi State Hospital along Capers Avenue.

Recently, an open house event was held where attendees could appreciate a model house that consisted of 2 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The small house occupies an area of 388 square feet of space and is a well-furnished and quite comfortable modular home to live in.

Its builder has noted that the houses feature new technology and are designed with three-inch polystyrene insulation, galvanized steel exterior walls, galvanized steel frames, powder-coated steel interiors, and are quite secure so that their occupants can have a comfortable and safe home for over 30 years.

To begin the construction of this small house project, the builder will first start by clearing the land, as the previously built property was quite deteriorated, and then proceed with the installation of water pipes, sewage, and all necessary underground constructions.

Once these stages are completed, the assembly of the houses will proceed, and subsequently, heating, cooling, and all necessary connections will be made so that the house can have water, sewage, and electricity services. According to the builder, these connections and installations of the houses could be done in one day.

Although there are still skeptics regarding this type of small house and its innovative construction, its promoter is confident in obtaining more loans and state and local assistance that will allow them to execute the totality of their project to help the thousands of families in Jackson who are struggling for a better quality of life and decent housing.
