The city of Flint offers a new assistance program for homeowners
Thanks to state grants, Genesee County has a variety of programs and measures all aimed at offering resident homeowners assistance to obtain affordable housing or to make necessary repairs within their homes.
Of all the regions that make up Genesee, Flint is the largest city in the county and the state of Michigan. Due to its size and population, a large portion of the state funds invested in housing conservation and affordability programs are concentrated in this important metropolis.
Currently, the city of Flint has two housing programs within the municipal project. The first aims at the development of new housing, and the other specializes in the repair, replacement, and modification of house roofs.
The program designed to promote the development of new housing is aimed at developers, investors, or groups dedicated to the construction of single-family properties or housing complexes intended to be sold or rented.
This fund is allocated under the promise that a portion of the construction projects developed with these funds must be directed to residents who earn an average annual income.
As for the program that focuses on replacing, improving, or revitalizing property roofs, its focus is mainly on single-family homes. The program funds are for resident homeowners with defective roofs. Typically, the funds focus on repairs to structures or surfaces, ceilings, gutters, and downspouts.
The roof revitalization program is delivered through mortgages to eligible homeowners. The agreed value within this mortgage can be forgiven after five years, without interest.
Residents of the city of Flint who wish to benefit from the housing program or the roof revitalization program must primarily prove that their income is capped at 120% of the area’s median rent, among other requirements. Both programs have a submission deadline of December 16 of this year.
