Top Ten Cities that Have the Wildest Commutes

Cities Wildest Commutes

Surprisingly, there are many people that commute hours just to get to their place of work. While the national average time people commute is 25 minutes, there are still plenty that have to commute about two hours each day.

These people are called “mega commuters” or those that travel 90 minutes a day and about 50 miles to and from work.  Many also have been “reverse-commuting” to their jobs, which is when employees travel from the city to the suburbs.

An interesting statistic about crazy commuters is that most of them seem to be well-to-do older white men. The reason for this could be because people need to travel father and wider to find good jobs. The longer commute times seem to be within major cities, like New York and L.A. Here is a list of the top ten cities with the worst commutes:

1. San Francisco has 2.06% of its population as mega commuters. The average travel time for the individual commuter is 32.2 minutes.

2. New York, home to subway commuters, is the second highest. It has 1.9% of its population as mega commuters while the average travel time is 29 minutes.

3. Washington D.C. has 1.89% of its population as mega commuters while the average travel time of the daily commuter is 37.3 minutes.

4. Trenton, NJ is also a major contender. 1.4 % of its population is mega commuters. There was no data released on the city’s average commuting time.

5. L.A. is known for its urban sprawl and annoying lines of traffic. You definitely need a car to commute to work in L.A. 1.25 % of its population consists of mega commuters while the average travel time is 32.3 minutes.

6. Among Boston’s population, 1.17% is mega commuters. It takes, on average, 32.7 minutes to commute to work in this seafood haven.
